Inconvenient To Say The Least

Posted on Saturday 3 March 2007

God dammit, I update WordPress very infrequently for a reason, that reason is because it takes too damn long, there’s lots of uploading small files to do which takes far too long over SFTP as a new connection has to be made and closed for each and every file. The last time I updated was 8 days ago, I updated to the latest version of WordPress at the time, version 2.1.1. Now version 2.1.2 is out and ordinarily I wouldn’t care, however, these aren’t ordinary circumstances.

Dun dun DUUUUUUUUUUUUN.

Basically, someone broke into the WordPress server and altered the download slightly. They injected some of their own code into the WordPress 2.1.1 release which allows them to arbitrarily run PHP code on your server. Now, according to WordPress, it’s only people who downloaded it in the last 5 days that have the dodgy version, and I downloaded 8 days ago, which means I’m safe right? Well that’s the problem, I don’t know, I’m pretty sure I am, but what if…?

So now I have to upgrade again, *sigh*, woe is me.

Anyway, moving on from that bad news, I have a new voice. Two new voices actually, one called Kate and one called Paul, both from NeoSpeech. I installed them a few days ago, and they sound remarkably realistic. Not the 1960’s-sci-fi-film-esque voices we’re all used to, but … almost human. In my opinion, Paul’s voice is the slightly better one, but you can decide for yourself, I’ve created an audio file of this blog post, read out to you by Paul and Kate news caster style, and with a slight twist.

Here is the audio file (1.37MB), and here is the script for any who want to follow it through. It’s sort of a pod cast, in the not sort of way.

Here’s a little something I made four days ago, kinda funny. Has a bit of Microsoft Sam in it, awww yeah, gotta get a piece of that action in here.

Yeah, I feel the same way about the WordPress incident. I just hope it doesn’t happen again. I had to upgrade twice over the course of a few days. Gah! 😛

As for the voices… that’s just simply awesome! We were talking about that a little bit over IM the other day but this longer clip you made up really shows how far computer voices has come. It still has some rough edges but overall it sounds very realistic. Just great! 🙂

Yeah, I think they pause for just slightly too long between words though, and increasing the speed to +1 just makes it seem a bit rushed. They need a +0.5 speed setting. 😛
