Mint Seems To Be Broken

Posted on Saturday 29 October 2005

I’ve noticed recently that Mint seems not to be working, like for example, yesterday Dan went to my site, saw the new header image and at 18:29:39 said to me, “Nice head-R.” However, upon checking Mint it appears that I didn’t receive any hits between 6 and 7 PM.

Then, later on at 2:36 AM, Ben posted a comment in the Matlab entry, however Mint recorded no hits between 2 and 3 AM. Here’s a screeny showing the lack of prescence:

No hits recorded for the past 24 hours.

In fact, Mint hasn’t recorded any hits at all in the last 24 hours. Something very strange is going on here.

    haha, worth the 30 bucks?
Maybe it’s some hidden thing, stops working after a few weeks 😉

To be honest I don’t think it’s Mint. I got this email from my host last week:

We have been experiencing an unusually heavy disk activity with your database server ‘menchit’, and we are unable to isolate the problem. The admins moved the server to new hardware.

    And then later that day:

We have been monitoring the server activity, and everything looks fine now. The problem was evidently hardware related.

To be honest I think that they’re still having some problems with the database server and that it might not be hardware related. Sometimes pages are very slow to load and then, just seconds later, everything is fine again.

Alternatively I could just be fucking stupid and not have included this line in header.php for the new skin when I changed over:

I completely forgot about that. Bugger. So I guess that Mint was broken, but it was my fault that it was broken.

(Although I still think that Dreamhost are having a few probs with their database server.)

Anyone can make mistakes. To be honest I’d completely forgotten about having to include that line again. Seeing as WordPress designs are built on CSS based layouts, it shouldn’t be necessary to change the markup just to change the looks of it anyway *cough*.

    Maybe it’s because Mint sucks.

Well the site went down yesterday, that wasn’t pleasing, starting to seem like the old host. However, I sent an inquiring email to Dreamhost:

I just tried to check my site and it is down (www.hddkillers.com), I can’t access anything on it, I use Mint and WordPress so I tried navigating to /wp-admin and /mint and neither of those loaded either.

I tried pinging hddkillers.com and it resolved to an IP but I got no replies. I also checked the Dreamhost blog and it is still up, so is it a problem with the server my site is hosted on or something? And if so, how long will it last for?

Unlike my last host though, I actually got a reply other than, “Sit down, shut up and be patient thou unworthy scum!” In fact what they actually said was this:

Your site is up and running now. We had some abusive users that clogged our database servers. Our admins have taken action and removed the problem. We are sorry for any inconviences and appreciate your patience.

    Thanks!

    Glen

So huzzah! They actually did something about it! Also, hopefully pages will load a bit faster now, since people aren’t fisting the database server.

Lol, I did that once. I downloaded and enabled K2 but forgot to add the mint script. There were like 2 hits that day. Then I realized, “Oh, duh, I forgot the Mint script!” Annoying. :p
