CSS Column Pull-Out

Posted on Sunday 23 April 2006

I wouldn’t call this a CSS challenge, because on the webdev forums whenever someone starts a thread challenging people to do something, I instantly hate them. As if there’s some marvelous prize for the winner, the honour and privilege of having helped some dude with his problem.

With that said, this will probably be challenging. Here’s the thread that initially created the need for a very specific solution.

To summarise the question in the thread, what is needed is a way of creating a column pull-out without actually putting the pull-out in the middle of the content in the column.

I had a think and managed to come up with a way that works, but not in Internet Explorer. Here’s what I have so far.

If anyone can help me out with regards to IE compatibility that’d be great. I’ve been experimenting with various ways and come close a few times, but never got it to quite work.

This wouldn’t just be useful for mamachika on the webdev forums though, it would be especially useful for cleaning up the markup with cross-column pull-outs too, *cough*totally done here first*cough*.

So if anyone could help out with this, I’d be extremely grateful.

    Hello there.

    I found your site through a XML related snippet at javascript.com. I didn’t understand much of it so i clicked on trying to find an explanation. Maybe i’ll find it somewhere over here later. However now on this question i’m no expert myself. But i recently stumbled on another site of someone very adept with CSS;

    He’s named ‘Stu Nichols’ and runs the following site:
    http://www.cssplay.co.uk/index.html

    Maybe the two of you could crack this nut eh?

    Good luck at any rate…
