IQ Test

Posted on Friday 24 February 2006

Four days ago someone sent me a link to an online test at to determine my lucky charm. Normally I wouldn’t pay attention to such trash, but on this particular occasion I was mightily bored.

I clicked through the various questions and was indifferent to hear that my lucky charm is a scarab. As expected, zero enjoyment came out of the experience. However, as I was about to close the window I saw a link to a “Super IQ Test” on the site. So I thought that since I was still bored, I may as well see what I got.

After the first five questions I felt like killing the closest cute animal violently, but continued on so that the effort I had already expended was not wasted, I could at least come away with a score at the end if I carried on.

54 questions in total, not very many really, and I was informed that my IQ is 141. Now, this leads to one of two conclusions, either my IQ has randomly gone up since I last took a test, or their questions are laughably easy.

I’m going to go with that second option, especially since when I was taking the test I spent extra long on each question trying to see where the trick was. Seriously, on an IQ test if you get an easy question, it’s almost NEVER an easy question, apparently not so on this test, there are lots of them.

So once I was done there was another link to an “in-depth analysis” of my IQ score, so I clicked on it, but was informed that I’d have to pay for the privalege. Considering that this test consisted of only 54 questions, most of which were very easy, I didn’t think it was worth it.

Well I’d forgotten about that test and I thought it was all in the past, however when I checked my emails earlier I had one from

David, as a top-scorer on Tickle’s Super IQ Test, the in-depth analysis of your IQ score is FREE.

You’ll find out:

  • Your scores on 8 areas of intelligence
  • How your IQ compares to others
  • Ways to improve your intellectual strengths
  • The answers to all test questions
  • The science behind the test…and more!

Well, if it’s FREE, who am I to pass this up. So I clicked. Here’s a graph of my “Super IQ Dimentions” that was on the page:

My Super IQ Dimentions

I’ve uploaded the “in-depth analysis” if anyone wants to see it. I got three questions wrong; 30, 35 and 51. If anyone wants to take this test by the way, I’d take it before looking at this, because it’s got all the answers on.

By the way, I don’t know what’s up with their site, but when I saved a copy of it locally and then opened it up, something really went wrong with it. Seems that for some reason the width grew by about 200px, it’s still readable though, just that all the graphs are messed up (hence why I posted a screen shot of the main one). I had a quick look at the source but can’t be bothered wading through the hundreds of tables to find out what exactly is screwed up.

Anyway, after looking at the answers I can accept that I got questions 30 and 35 wrong, but I have no idea how I got question 51 wrong. Question 51 went as follows:

51. If all Laps are Lops, all Lops are Loops, and all Loops are Lups, then which of the following is not true?

A. All Laps are Loops
B. All Loops are Laps
C. All Laps are Lups
D. All Lops are Lups

A. If all Laps are Lops and all Lops are Loops, then all Laps must be Loops and therefore answer A is incorrect.
C. Since all Laps are Loops and all Loops are Lups, all Laps must be Lups and therefore answer C is incorrect.
D. If all Lops are Loops and all Loops are Lups, all Lops must be Lups and therefore answer D is incorrect.

B. Now onto the answer I should have chosen but didn’t for some reason. I have established that all Laps are Loops, but this does not mean that all Loops are Laps. If you aren’t sure why, consider a square, no matter what the size, it’s always a quadrilateral (has four sides), therefore all squares are quadrilaterals, but all quadrilaterals are not squares because there are other four sided shapes such as rectangles, kites, rhombbi and trapezia. However in this case we have not been given enough information, all Loops may or may not be Laps, it is impossible to tell, but from the information given, answer B is the only one that could be correct.

If you take the test and get a higher score than me, feel free to brag, if you get a lower score than me, feel free to lie about it and brag anyway.

I have no life, so I took those tests, too. Got the scarab as well, but did quite a bit worse than you on the IQ test. 133, “Creative Theorist,” and my chart-thing was rather more dramatic than yours…yeah, and #51 bugged the hell out of me, too. I swear those last 4 q’s were there out of spite.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, there are nowhere near enough questions to make it accurate, plus the test is probably aimed at adults.

I am also a creative theorist at an IQ of 152. Of course, in second grade I was in the 95th percentile, or 125. And we reach the bulk of our max IQ potential at 16 (Don’t worry it still can work its way up after that, just in lesser degrees), so it’s plausible but highly unlikely. I just had a super smart day. That’s actually how my whole day has been.

Anyways the average american is 103 so we are all above aberage. Though if the test was more thurough in the mathmatical portion, I would not have faired as well. I get math up to a point and then I hit a mental road block.

Regarding question 51: I see your point about squares, and that’s the right train of thought. A more thoroughly successful question might result if Laps, etc., were replaced by, say, places of origin:

If all Miamians are Floridians, all Floridians are Americans, and all Americans are North Americans, then which of the following is not true?

    A. All Miamians are Americans
    B. All Americans are Miamians
    C. All Miamians are North Americans
    D. All Floridians are North Americans

Thus you see why B is the correct answer, the way the question is posed, because not all Americans are Miamians. Sometimes such questions should have things people know rather than “widgets.”

By the way, I scored 152 and did not go for the in-depth analysis.

I think some people get how IQ test are scored and others do not.

I’m just responding because I see alot of comments on various IQ sites such as I got this high number and i’m only say 12 years old.

Your IQ score is not an absolute score. Its a relative score and is based on your age. So its telling you how intellectual you are for your age. Its not saying that if you are 6 and you get a score of 130 and a 40 year old gets a score of 110, that you are more intelligent than the 40 year old because you got a higher score. Your score of 140 is comparing how many answers you got correct compared to others your age group. Thus if the average 6 year old gets 20 questions wrong a score of 100(average/normal IQ) for a six year old means 20 questions wrong. Where as if the average 40 year old gets only 12 questions wrong a score of 100 for a 40 year old would mean getting only about 12 questions wrong.
Thus the 10 year old for example could get 13 questions wrong and the 40 year old could only get 7 questions wrong and the 10 year old have a higher IQ than the 40 year old. Why is that you say, it is because the 10 year old’s score is only comparing him to others his age, not an absolute score. What it would mean is that he/she is very smart for a 10 year old.
Here is a last analogy if you still dont get it. Imagine there is a SQ test, testing your speed quotient (how fast you are) and there is a cockroach that is super super fast. The cockroach scores 150 on the SQ test. Than there is this slow car that scores 60 on the SQ test. Even though the cockroach has a higher score than the car, the car is still faster than the cockroach. Why you ask, well because the test is only comparing the cockroach aganist other cockroaches and the car aganist other cars. The same with an IQ test, its comparing you aganist others your age. (relative not absolute)

    I got 131 Complex intellectual

Yea question 51 got me too

Question 51 is flawed, particularily when you consider the ‘all boons are moons’ question, the test contradicts itself.

The questions are laughably easy, as has been stated before, these tests only prove your ability to take them, and little else.

Wow. I didn’t know there would be a blog about this question, but it sure explained it for me after the test. I kind of did it on a spring after my grave shift before bed and I guessed B was the answer since the rest went in a rightward direction. Other than the flowers one I whipped through that pretty fast and got a 168, which is probably wrong in real life, but I will go to bed happy.

The post before me though has it wrong when saying
“Question 51 is flawed, particularily when you consider the ‘all boons are moons’ question, the test contradicts itself.”
First, I left the spelling mistake, whatever.
Second, if you looked at the questions, you’d know you were wrong.
Anyways, I may have got 168, but it probably won’t get that much higher because I’m 19.
If I’m not mistaken, your peak intelligence is when you are 20, but I could be wrong there.

I took this test and scored 133, complex intellectual. I took the SAT college board test in 1981 and scored 1190. There are a number of methods (you can find some on the web) to convert an SAT score to an IQ score which makes perfect sense when you consider that a college board exam is attempting to measure your “scholastic aptitude” which is virtually synonymous with intelligence. The SAT test report gives you a percentile ranking compared to the general population which can easily be converted to an IQ. My 1981 SAT score of 1190 is in the 95th percentile among the general population (IQ of 126). Many years later I took a real Stanford-Binet timed IQ test and scored 127. So I would say the tickle test and similar internet IQ tests will give you a rough approximation of your IQ, but if you really want an accurate estimate order a real Stanford-Binet test book or get one in a bookstore.
