Server Bashing

Posted on Tuesday 6 December 2005

Well my server seems to be standing up pretty well, I’ve setup a username and password for people to log on with, and I’ve told a few people how to connect. I just checked my file server to see what was happening, here’s what I saw; sessions and open files.

The reason I’ve got task manager open is to show the network utilisation. 0.78% doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you consider that it’s a 1000Mbps connection, and I’m connected to the university network by a 10Mbps connection, a usage of 1% would be 10Mbps, so it would seem that with 4 people connected it’s pushing the limit!

Although it doesn’t actually tell me who is watching what, I can guess, for example, Andy is most likely watching Due South 1×13, why do I suspect this? Well here’s an extract from my MSN chat logs earlier:

[13:48:52] Andy: isnt it blockin my ip?
[13:48:56] “I think my : I didn’t block you
[13:49:09] “I think my : I just right clicked on you, then clicked “close session” 😛
[13:49:32] Andy: oh
[13:49:42] Andy: u shudnt have told me that!
[13:49:42] Andy: lol
[13:49:49] “I think my : yeah
[13:49:51] “I think my : I know 😀
[13:50:09] “I think my : lol
[13:50:11] “I think my : and you’re back
[13:50:37] Andy: i can watch one
[13:50:43] “I think my : riiiight
[14:36:59] Andy: now block me till fri
[14:37:09] Andy: regardless of what i say

He’s currently not blocked so I don’t think he’ll be getting any work done any time soon. Apparently he has no will power. 😀

Of the other users, HALLNET-PHJAP is John, HALLNET-TTIPM is Ian, and WILD-CHILD is Paul. Paul is one of the halls subwardens, I think he’s supposed to stop stuff like this, but he’s currently watching Cube. 😀

Anyhow, the reason why I uploaded full size screen shots is because I wanted to point out one other thing. On my server there are two onboard network cards, one of them is 100Mbps, the other is 1000Mbps. I connect to hallnet with the 100Mbps card, and the other is connected to my main PC and then the two conncetions are bridged so that my PC can access the internet. However, if you look to the bottom right of the screen, you’ll see a network disconnected icon. Apparently the gigabit link from the server to this PC is not connected, which is somewhat odd, as it quite plainly IS connected. I know this because I can access the internet and all files on the server. Strange…

Both Andy and John have finished watching Due South now, think I might get the second season just to be a bastard. 😀
